Dozens of kilograms of meat and dairy products were confiscated from people who arrived in Lithuania, the State Food and Veterinary Service of the Republic reports, the website of the State Border Committee of the Republic of Belarus writes.

A baggage check was carried out at Vilnius International Airport - ten kilograms of animal products were confiscated within one day.

It is noted that the import of meat and dairy products from third countries, even for personal use, is prohibited in the EU states in order to avoid the spread of infectious diseases.

According to the director of the service, Darius Remeika, these bans are not new, but people who come to Lithuania most often do not know about them.

“After checking the luggage of passengers arriving from Ukraine and Belarus at Vilnius International Airport, ten kilograms of sausages and lard were seized. However, checks are carried out not only at the airport, but at all border crossing points. Every day they seize from several kilograms to several tens of kilograms of products prohibited for import,” Remeika said.

He noted that the products in the luggage of passengers can pose a threat to the spread of African swine fever (ASF), as well as other infections.

The remake also added that the situation with ASF in the Baltic region and Eastern Europe remains difficult, and border control is one of the effective measures to reduce the spread of the disease.

The day before, the Lithuanian Customs Service announced that restrictions on the import of meat, milk and dairy products for personal use from third countries into the EU zone came into force in the republic. It is noted that the restrictions do not apply to countries such as Andorra, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland. The ban was introduced in order to avoid infection of animals with ASF and its spread.

The exception is baby food and milk formulas for children. We also allow the import of medicinal animal feed, if its weight does not exceed two kilograms per person. It is noted that up to two kilograms of honey and honey products, eggs, live oysters, mussels and snails, up to 20 kilograms of fish products can be imported into the EU countries.

According to the food and veterinary service, since the beginning of this year, almost 1.4 tons of various animal products have been seized from the luggage of passengers. It is noted that persons arriving in Lithuania from third countries are checked by customs officers, as well as by the State Border Guard Service at those border crossing points where there are no customs control points.
