Based on this information, the police detained Manson and his "followers". As a result of a lengthy trial, seven members of the "Family" were sentenced to death in the gas chamber. In 1972, by decision of the Supreme Court, the death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment. None of those sentenced were released on parole, despite repeated petitions. Some, like their mastermind Manson, have died behind bars.

Authorities do not know what to do with the body of a criminal
