51 year old Canadian entrepreneur and adventurer Greg Kolodzijzik has a dozen Ironman triathlon victories and many more marathons to his credit. His incredible stamina in both cycling and rowing on water led him to become a multiple world record holder, the last record being set in 2008 for covering the longest distance on water, which he crossed in just 24 hours using only his muscles.
That same year, he stirred up the sports media with his plans to cross the Atlantic using a boat called the Within, which was propelled by ordinary mechanical pedals. His initial goal: Beat the official record held by rower Emmanuel Coindrome, who covered the distance from the Canary Islands to Guadeloupe in 43 days.
Subsequently, his goal was reborn, turning into an attempt to become the first person to cross the Pacific Ocean - from British Columbia to Hawaii - in a ship powered by human muscles. Kolodzeizik initially invested almost $119,000 in the vessel through fundraising and donations.
Designed by a naval architect and powered by human muscles, the lightweight Within is built from carbon fiber, has six watertight compartments, a steel keel "flask" for stability, and solar panels to power modern navigational equipment. The pedal seat is located at the front of the cab. In 2010, Gizmag's Ben Coxworth called the device "a maritime engineering marvel."
Kolodzeyzik wanted to prove the potential of using human power, but numerous coastal trials brought him face to face with the dangers of sea storms.
The vessel naturally remained watertight and withstood 360-degree flips in the water without a single leak. However, "because the Within was designed to be very fast, it is quite narrow and as such very unstable in rough waters," Kolodzeyzik explained on his website. And such coups and pitching may already be excessive for his middle-aged body. Now he hopes that someone more enduring and young for such an unusual sea voyage will sit at the pedals of his boat.
Kolodzeizik recently announced that he is selling WiTHin for CAD$84,000 (approximately US$82,000) or any better deal. The kit comes with all the necessary equipment and supplies, including a waterproof sleeping bag and a survival kit.
