A number of airlines have cancelled or reduced the frequency of flights to South Sudan following an alleged attempted coup there on December.

15 and subsequent fighting. Kenya Airways cancelled flights from the capital Juba on December

16 and again from December 23 to 31 following continued unrest and Rwandair cancelled flights on December 20.

Many foreign countries are evacuating their citizens from South Sudan, using either military or chartered aircraft. On December 19 a Royal Air Force Boeing C-17A Globemaster III evacuated 182 people from Juba's airport while a Nova Airways Boeing 737-500 with a collapsed nose gear was positioned three quarters of the way down the airport's only runway, disrupting other flights. Another RAF C-17 flight took place on December 20 without incidence.

The next day, three US Special Operations Command Bell-Boeing CV-22B Ospreys, in South Sudan to evacuate people, were hit by small arms fire leaving four US service members wounded. The previous day a United Nations helicopter had to be abandoned after being shot at and badly damaged during an attempt to evacuate UN personnel and civilians.
