Western Union began providing money transfer services through its Agent banks in Russia in October 1991. Western Union MT East is a subsidiary of Western Union Financial Services, Inc, which is a part of the Western Union Company (NYSE: WU), and provides Western Union® Money Transfer™ service in Russia and within several CIS countries and territories, such as Ukraine, Belarus, Middle Asia and Pridnestrovie.
The Western Union MT East business office is located in Moscow, where there is also a Call Service Center. Call Center and Service Desk consult with Western Union Agents on different issues and provide detailed reference information on service offerings to consumers.
In 2001, local consumers were able to transfer Russian rubles within the country. On May 16, 2002, new rates for international money transfer from Russia to the CIS countries were launched, reducing money transfer fees by 10\\% while maintaining the level of top quality customer service.
Effective from the 15th of December 2003, money tranfers from Russia to Belarus are available either in US dollars or Russian rubles.
From July 1, 2004, money transfers from Russia to Tadjikistan are provided in Russian rubles. Payout of money transfers sent in rubles is available in rubles only.
The new tariff rates for sending money from Russia to CIS are effective from October 6, 2004. For example, if you send a sum from US$0 - US$100, you pay only a US$6 fee.
From February 1, 2005, special rates for sending money transfers from Russia to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Makao are effective until the end of 2005. The new fee is only US$10 for any amount of transfer.
