In summer, southern Siberia changes. This is one of the most productive regions of Russia, where wheat, oats, rye, barley and sunflower are grown.
About 10% of the land in Russia is used in agriculture, which began to revive after the transition to market relations.
Not far from the border with Mongolia is Lake Baikal - an object of worship since ancient times. Now that the Russians have gained freedom of movement, they can explore it.
The lake is the oldest on the planet, its length is almost 650 kilometers, and its depth is more than 1.5 kilometers. It contains one-fifth of the world's fresh water. There are 1200 species of unique plants and animals in the region, which are not found anywhere else on the planet.
The Buryats living here still call Baikal the sacred sea, for them it is the holiest place on Earth.
The lake itself is in danger due to the fault of numerous tourists. The Trans-Siberian Express passes not far from Lake Baikal, passing more than 9 thousand kilometers from St. Petersburg to the Pacific Ocean. Of course, tourists leave their mark.
Someone comes here for one day and goes back, others come with tents. They throw rubbish everywhere and it needs to be taken away. For some visitors, nothing is sacred, even the places of worship on Lake Baikal: there are places with chipped rock paintings - these are terrible acts of vandalism.
