Officials of the Russian Orthodox Church condemned the fact of blatant disgrace - someone secretly took swabs from icons and relics, to which believers constantly fall with their lips, and carried out a bacterial analysis. After that, the atheist scientists treacherously published the materials of the study, which led some of the parishioners at least into surprise.
Have you ever had a desire to know what remains on the icon after the kiss of believers? But a student of the British Higher School of Design Daria Fedorova decided to find out by conducting a bacterial analysis of the icons of Moscow churches.
The girl was interested in medicine since childhood, but decided to devote her life to the study of design and art, and when she had the opportunity to make her own creative project, she had the idea to combine medicine and art.
Recently, Darya had the idea to take a bacterial analysis from icons and try to germinate these bacteria in the laboratory, and also find out what kind of microbes live in Moscow churches.
Together with her partner, a laboratory researcher, the girl went to Moscow churches in the hope of taking an analysis. As Daria said, the ministers of the church did not greet them very cordially, some were wary of ladies with long cotton buds.
The purpose of the study was to show that dangerous bacteria can also live in churches, despite the sanctity of the place. Daria explains that her project does not deny God, it only shows people the reality that they might not think about in such a place. In total, the girls went around six churches in Zamoskvorechye and took swabs from ten icons: St. Sergius, the Resurrection of Christ, Seraphim of Sarov, St. Elizabeth, the Mother of God, the Baptism of the Lord, Spiridon of Trimifuntsky, the “Inexhaustible Chalice”.
The analyzes taken showed that the icon contains many microbes: staphylococci, streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli. The students even had a suspicion of anthrax, but in the end it turned out to be a kindred wand.
For such a study, you can award the girl with the Ig Nobel Prize. Of course, the icon is full of bacteria, we understand this and do our best - we periodically disinfect the glass. In all my practice, I do not remember a single case of an epidemic that would have affected our parishioners. For example, I am obliged to pour out the wine and rinse the cup after communion, but I don’t do that. I myself drink wine after the parishioners, and, as you can see, I am alive and well, said the preacher and protodeacon Andrey Kuraev.
