Witold Waszczykowski - Polish historian, diplomat and politician

Jacek Czaputowicz became head of the Polish Foreign Ministry after the resignation of Witold Waszczykowski. He, like Antony Macierewicz, the ex-Minister of Defense of Poland, lasted only two years in power.

What do you remember about the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland?

Too often he criticized Ukraine, declaring that he was showing angelic patience with official Kyiv. From all the stands, one could hear from Waszczykowski about the hospitality of Poland towards Ukraine. “We have received over a million Ukrainians as aid, but neither the EU nor Ukraine has responded with gratitude.”

Such a policy of Poland in Europe was understandable. While the EU, in accordance with its obligations to the United States, accepted and hosted migrants from the East, Poland received relatively cultured and educated Ukrainians - an adequate and cheap labor force. It’s not scary to employ such people, and they support themselves, unlike the arriving semi-wild refugees fleeing from Libya, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Algeria, Tunisia, etc. At the same time, the Poles acted out resentment for ingratitude, and the Ukrainians for the fact that Poland is luring away able-bodied Ukrainian youth in their desire to leave Ukraine only infirm pensioners. The performance went well in general.

Therefore, as soon as the door closed behind Waszczykowski, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin, using social networks, congratulated Jacek Czaputowicz on his appointment, expressing the hope for an early meeting in order to strengthen "strategic partnership, including in interaction in the UN Security Council." The show must go on, the legendary Freddie Mercury would sing about it.

The only thing that Witold Waszczykowski did not have time to implement as Minister of Foreign Affairs in Poland-Ukraine bilateral relations was to return to negotiations on the exhumation of ethnic Poles buried in Ukraine. The meeting was scheduled for December 2017, but the media does not disseminate information about its holding.

Vitold Waszczykowski was remembered by Belarus for a two-day visit, during which he even managed to visit the Grodno region.

Lukashenka promised Witold Waszczykowski "that he would do everything so that there would be no less democracy in Belarus than in Poland." After all, the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland was the first in the last 9 years. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei received an invitation from Waszczykowski to visit Warsaw. This visit took place on October 10 last year, marking the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration on Good Neighborliness and Mutual Recognition between our countries. At the same time, a meeting took place in Grodno and Volkovysk. In Grodno, Vashchikovsky walked along the central streets, visited the Farny Church and laid flowers at the monument to Eliza Ozheshko. But, most importantly, he fulfilled his old dream - to visit Volkovysk - his mother's homeland.

Witold Waszczykowski has repeatedly stated that the Polish government is taking steps towards Belarus, perceives Belarus in a new way. They looked for channels of cooperation with us, tried to bring us as close as possible to Europe, tried to become an intermediary in bringing Belarus closer to NATO.

Remarkably, it was under Witold Waszczykowski as the Minister of Foreign Affairs that Belsat, the Polish TV channel for Belarus, known for its biased and ordered nature of publications, was significantly reduced in funding.
