On this autumn Slavic holiday, according to ancient pagan traditions, a feast was arranged by the mountain - yes, this is how the festive food was laid on the table, and a huge pie with wishes for a generous harvest next year was placed in its center. Letting the generous Nature and the spring-summer Gods and Goddesses go to rest, people began festive fortune-telling and ideas about the hero and the underworld, symbolizing a quick meeting with the awakened earth and its fruits.
The Slavic calendar of our ancestors is full of various holidays that have managed to overcome millennia and even “pump” from pagan culture to Christian. Although the church rejects all sorts of borrowings from an old and strong religion.
Autumn Slavic holidays were incredibly important in the life of our ancestors. There are many holidays in pagan culture, but there are four obligatory and largest of them. One of them was Radogoshch, which was celebrated on September 27 and is also the day of the autumn equinox. Another reason why this day was celebrated on a special scale was the end of all seasonal work in the field. The crop was harvested, the fields were prepared for the winter period, which means that it was possible to enjoy the last warm days and the result of their hard work.
The ancient Slavs believed that from that time the closure of Svarog began. This is the time when all the Light gods left the world of Reveal until next spring, and handed over the reins of government to the god Frost.
The whole village gathered at the temples together and with the priests and sorcerers held prayers and special ceremonies. Our ancestors made a straw bird in advance, which they then burned at the temple. Thus, farewell to the Light gods was held until next spring. And in the evening, almost the whole village gathered around the fire, and the elder began his story about the hero and the underworld. This legend told that winter is approaching, but still the frost is not eternal and the day will come when the snow will melt, and nature will come to life again and real life will begin.
Further after the story, it was time for the next ancient rite - purification through the Fire. All the villagers in turn jumped over the fire, thereby being cleansed, and at that time the Magi walked on hot coals and prayed for the coming winter, for the well-being of the people and the mercy of the gods. Also from that day on, the ancient Slavs began to prepare for the winter, stocked up on firewood, prepared the crop for long-term storage, and even made bread preparations.
Another obligatory rite of the Slavic holiday Radogoshch was a detour with the Rich. Our ancestors believed that if he went around all the houses in the village, then all the inhabitants would be protected from diseases, sorrows, death and a fierce enemy. And before this ceremony, a new fire was necessarily lit in the houses in order to cleanse the house of dark forces.
